My first, at 15inches and over 2.5kg, he was no lightweight. He was very solidly built, not the fastest, but he always powered through. In terms of looks, he was dark grey and had the logo placed on him in a way that reminded me of a shield. All this earned him the Viking name Olof.

Only recently did I find out that Olof means ‘Ancient Treasure’. And how true has that become since my laptop got stolen and I’ve had to dig him out! But really the name came from Olof Mellberg, the Swedish defender (:

My second love was called Murdoch. He was smaller than Olof but he was powerful. He breezed through Matlab and any other Engineering software I threw at him. He had his quirks, allowing me to be comfortable keying out Dr Seuss-ish works, but he knew when it was time to get down and be serious. His mirror-black exterior was sleek and shiny, he was handsome. His curves were almost aerodynamic and his dashboard like a plane. A pilot’s name would suit him and therefore, Murdoch, of the A-Team fame.

Now this machine. This … Mac. Needs a name.

I always thought I would name my third one Anderson, after the guy who played MacGyver but this Mac doesn’t feel like an Anderson. He’s lacking the rugged feel. He’s more pretty than handsome. Like, 90s boyband. Or Top Gun’s Maverick.

Ugh.

My Mac needs personality.

Other times, i.e. now, as my fingers move across the keys, creating that familiar sound, it feels like it’s been forever since I typed.

And it has. I’ve missed it.

For the longest time, every night, my fingers and the keys of Murdoch would have their dance. An orchestra of keystrokes and machine whirr, whereby at the end of it, we’ll have a story, a poem, or a heartwarming email.

Those days are over now, but it’s time to move on. There’s a new machine in my life. He hasn’t got a name for the moment, but he feels French.

Scandinavia (because I can’t just pick one country) is quite possibly one of my favoritest places. Denmarks flatlands make the sky seem endless, Norways fjords are breathtaking and Sweden, there are far too many reasons to love Sweden, not just for Ikea.

And if you know me, you know that I’ve been an avid supporter of the Swedish national football team for years. All through the Euro and World Cups, no other team made me as passionate.

Which brings me to the sad fact that the Sverige team did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup. And that begs the question: What will Nuri Ramli do? What war paint will she wear? Because she likes wearing paint.

As for going to South Africa, did you know my passport once prohibited me from entering South Africa?

Movies today, urban setting, good guys chase bad guys through town, cars explode, major public property destruction and sometimes I start thinking, if I was there, I would be a civilian, probably minding my own business going about buying gummy bears when BOOM! I get hit by an out-of-control semi-truck. Or knowing my luck this year, a stray bullet.

Now if I was on a battlefield .. I would … still probably gethitbyabullet … but it’s expected then.

Anyway, Passchendaele, it follows the general war movie formula where we have a soldier, a love interest and a nation engaged in war.

It all comes down to how the director intertwines the 3 factors together. I would say this movie is more for women (and the sensitive man). Yes the movie depicts the brutal and dark reality of war but before getting to the blood and gore, there’s the dialog, ‘Aww’ moments where you secretly wish your man would do that too.

All in all it was good for a Valentines weekend. You do after all have to say ‘passion’ when saying Passchendaele. So to Mr. Paul the Director, Parrot gives a cracker. (Really awesome movies get cookies – like WongFu’s War Torn or my favorite from the series, The Letters)
